Thanks to the latest advancement in minimally invasive endovascular technology, we are now able to successfully treat the majority of patients with narrowed or blocked arteries and arterial aneurysms without performing major open surgery.

Endovascular procedures can be performed under local anaesthetic usually via a small needle into the femoral artery in the groin. Through this needle, a wire and small tube are inserted into the artery and we can treat narrowed and blocked arteries with specialised wires, balloons, stents and devices.

The main techniques include:

  • Balloon angioplasty targets and ‘stretches’ up the narrowed or blocked section of artery. The balloon is not permanent and does not stay within the artery and is removed at the end of the procedure.
  • Stenting uses specialised metallic scaffolds to keep open the narrowed or blocked section of artery. Stents are permanent once placed and stay within the artery.

Minimally invasive endovascular surgery – what to expect?

As all minimally invasive endovascular operations are unique to the individual and disease process, a tailored explanation of the benefits, risks, likely outcomes, chances of success, and alternative options will be discussed with you in more detail.

Given the minimally invasive nature of these procedures there are some general similarities with post operative recovery:

  • Most endovascular procedures have a small risk of bleeding and you will be instructed to rest in bed straight after the procedure for a period of time up to four hours
  • Recovery time is minimal and patients usually stay in hospital overnight and in most cases can go home the next day
  • Patients can return to normal activity including driving the next day.
  • Heavy exercise including lifting heavy objects, vigorous exercise and swimming should be avoided initially until your review appointment
  •  If you develop any of the following please contact the rooms to speak with one of our staff
    • Swelling at the injection site
    • Significant redness or discharge from the injection site
    • Significant pain/discomfort in the area treated
